The body that isn't supposed to exist

Night Currents opens with a river guide finding a body on the last night of the season — someone the whole town has spent years pretending isn't real. It could've been a thriller. It's something better: a study of a community that has agreed, very politely, to look away.

Our lead is the one person who can't. The film never rushes her, and never lets the town off the hook. The dread isn't the corpse; it's the silence around it.

Tense, humane, beautifully shot on cold water. One of the best things we've added this year.
